Differences between Thai teak and Burmese teak

Teak from Thailand and Myanmar is commonly traded as Tectona grandis. However, country of origin alone does not determine the appearance, performance or suitability of an individual piece of timber.



Source and Growth Conditions
Timber characteristics vary with growing conditions, age and the part of the tree used. Thai plantation teak comes from planted sources. When comparing materials, ask about the actual source and batch rather than relying only on a country label.

Dimensions and Appearance
Available board sizes depend on the logs and the sawing method. Grain, knots, colour and sapwood should be assessed against an agreed grade. Grade names such as AB or AAA need a clear supplier definition before they can be compared.

Choosing for the Application
Select timber according to the intended use, dimensions, moisture content, grade and finish. Exterior or moisture-exposed applications require a suitable specification and maintenance plan.

Timber Origin and Documentation
Ask your supplier for documentation relevant to the material and destination. Do not assume that a country name, plantation description or grade label alone confirms certification or compliance.
